So your teen is now old enough to drive? While this should be a joyful moment, many parents remember it with some mixed feelings. Mixed feelings because they know their family budget is about to spiral up.
Could you imagine the additional cost of gas? Worse still is the fact that the family's auto insurance spend is going to increase by as much as three times just because of one driver -- albeit their beloved kid. Is there anything your teen can do to help you cut down costs? A lot! Let's take a look at them...
I will list several things and then dwell more on just one (the last point)...
1. Let your kid pay at least part of the bill if they must drive. If they are responsible for paying part of the bills they'll be more open to suggestions that will reduce your rate.
2. Let them be the secondary driver and preferably on an older car that will do just fine with the state's minimum.
3. Let your kid learn to drive at a driving school and NOT on their own. If they did learn on their own, let them take a course in defensive driving. Auto insurance providers have a favorable bias to teens that do this.
4. Encourage your teen to maintain straight A's or a minimum of B's. Auto insurers believe students who maintain good grades are less prone to recklessness.
5. Let your teen use a car that has a high safety rating.
6. Let them use the public mass transit whenever they can. It will cut down mileage and reduce your rates. And did I point out that you'll save on gas too?

7. Teens are very comfortable with the internet (We all know how hard it is to get them off those computers). Therefore, put them to good use...
Your teen will definitely do a more extensive comparison shopping online than you'll do. They have more time on their hands and are definitely more comfortable with the internet.
So describe what you're looking for: The best quote that does NOT leave you compromised in any way. They'd have to get and compare quotes from five or more quotes sites (Could be a pain for you to do but quite easy for the average teen).
Let them shortlist the most affordable quotes. You can go through those short listed and make the final decision. If done right, you could save over a thousand in premium dollars by doing this alone.
